BackgroundInformation | Myelinoligodendrocyteglycoprotein(MOG)isakeyCNS-specificautoantigenforprimarydemyelinationinmultiplesclerosis.Althoughthedisease-inducingroleofMOGhasbeenestablished,itsprecisefunctionintheCNSremainsobscure.MOGisatypeIintegralmembraneproteinpossessingasingleextracellularIgvariabledomain(Ig-V)(3,13,14).TheaminoacidsequenceofMOGishighlyconservedamonganimalspecies(>90%),indicativeofanimportantBIOLOGicalfunction.MOGisspecificallyexpressedintheCNSontheoutermostlamellaeofthemyelinsheathaswellasthecellbodyandprocessesofoligodendrocytes.ThedevelopmentallylateexpressionofMOGcorrelateswiththelaterstagesofmyelinogenesis,suggestingthatMOGhasaroleinthecompletion,compaction,and/ormaintenanceofmyelin,furthersuggestingthatMOGhasanadhesivefunctionwithintheCNS.ConsistentwithMOG"spossIBLeadhesiveroleintheCNS,ahomodimericformofMOGhasnotonlybeenobservedafterisolationfromtheCNSbuthasadditionallybeenobservedinsitu. |
